Reindalen
REINDALEN, SVALBARD
AUGUST - OCTOBER 2024
From late August to November, we walked and skied through
the Arctic landscape patiently watching the Svalbard reindeer. The lack of
trees and the fact that they have no natural predators make it possible to observe
the reindeer with a unique closeness.
The Svalbard Reindeer Project focuses on a small reindeer subspecies endemic to Svalbard and explores spatial ecology and plant-herbivore interactions. This work contributes to a three-decade-long tracking project in Reindalen. Using GPS data and on-site assessments, it aims to understand each reindeer’s story and assess the population’s resilience to the changing tundra landscape.
