PROJECTS ︎︎︎ https://field-scape.org/about Fri, 19 Apr 2024 20:50:23 +0000 Fieldscape https://field-scape.org/about ABOUT FIELDSCAPE Fieldscape is an experimental and interdisciplinary initiative fostering collaborations among artists, scientists, and fieldwork practitioners engaged in environmental research and storytelling. Fieldscape’s exploratory programing blends scientific inquiry with artistic expression and practical fieldwork techniques to uncover new insights, challenge conventional wisdom, and inspire creative solutions to complex environmental challenges. Fieldscape draws upon my experience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where I engaged in diverse research endeavors—from flying on zero-gravity flights and sending an experiment to the International Space Station to conducting fieldwork in the Arctic. In 2021, Fieldscape grew from a vision to broaden access to such unique research environments. Following the success of an Arctic field school I initiated at MIT, I relocated to Svalbard and converted my residence into a research station, laying the foundation for what would evolve into Fieldscape today. Fieldscape supports every stage of your research, from project planning and preparation to execution and follow-up. It focuses on facilitating projects that bridge scientific and artistic knowledge through collaborations and co-learning opportunities.In parallel, Fieldscape's journal features a collection of visual essays and firsthand accounts from the field. The program had two aims: to test technologies for future lunar exploration and to highlight the island's significance in understanding Earth's history. Lanzarote’s well-preserved volcanic structures, lava flow with varied morphologies, lava tubes, and valleys, make it an incredible educational resource and training ground for geologists and astronauts alike; the European Space Agency (ESA) trained on Lanzarote between 2017-2022. All experiments conducted during this expedition hold relevance for both space exploration and terrestrial applications. By testing these technologies in an environment that is representative of Earth and the Moon we can learn about the ruggedness of the technologies, how they can be operated in remote locations, and the cultural impacts that these distinct environments have. Lanzarote February 2024 Papalotes Atmosféricos, by Chucho (Jesús) Ocampo Aguilar, introduces a series of wind interfaces designed to explore kites and wind instruments for the purpose of low impact data collection and conduits for performative environmental observation and non-cartesian mapmaking. In this fieldwork exploration, kite strings resonated with the sound of the wind, while sensors and cameras were lifted into the sky to capture Calima dust storms carried from the Sahara desert and other meteorological phenomena; fieldwork brought to life. As Artist in Residence with the MIT Space Exploration Initiative’s Lunar research in Lanzarote, Chucho’s artistic research methods highlighted a sense of site specificity to the space analogue landscape. landscape patiently watching the Svalbard reindeer. The lack of trees and the fact that they have no natural predators make it possible to observe the reindeer with a unique closeness. The Svalbard Reindeer Project focuses on a small reindeer subspecies endemic to Svalbard and explores spatial ecology and plant-herbivore interactions. This work contributes to a three-decade-long tracking project in Reindalen. Using GPS data and on-site assessments, it aims to understand each reindeer’s story and assess the population’s resilience to the changing tundra landscape.
